Oil on the Dragonfly

That is oil on the wings of the dragonfly.

Gulf breezes blow in like they always have. And the ghosts of Faulkner and Walker Percy and Thomas Wolfe just weep.

Beyond blame and politics and really bad ideas.

The dragonfly can’t move. Stuck in the oil.

John Denver comes back to sing: “And the song that I am singing is a prayer for non-believers. Come and stand beside us. We can find a better way.”

I don’t know whether BP now stands for Bad People or Belligerent Profiteers. All I know is that they might consider going back to their previous name of Amoco. I buy all of my gas from Hell, uh, Shell. It might be time for all of us to review Jimmy Carter’s “Crisis of Confidence” speech from Sunday, July 15, 1979; we still need to break from our unhealthy dependence on foreign oil.

I stopped buying gas from BP long before the latest crisis since in my neighborhood they are one of the more expensive stations. BP as far as I am concerned stands for Big Phony, they are supposed to know something about drilling etc. but apparently there is no Plan B if something goes wrong. I find it hard to believe they make a hole in the bottom of the Gulf and can’t figure how to close it. I just hope that their record profits over the years will cover the costs to clean this up – if not “oil well” I mean “oh well”.
